•Local Initiatives - We need Volunteers! All nonprofits are hurting in the present economy, and ACE MV is no exception. So how do we support and develop all of these wonderful ideas? Volunteerism is key to supporting ACE’s efforts. We rely on your passion for education and love of our community. President Obama has challenged Americans to find a cause to serve. ACE is a prime opportunity. Please help us by sharing your skills. Sign up online to help or give a call. Here a few ways help is needed: • instruct a course and pass on a skill • share your computer skills to help ACE create a blog • write a grant to fund an ACE initiative • register students at the Sampling Fair (Nov. 13) • participate in fundraisers • organize volunteers for specific projects • and, very importantly for all who love to learn, spread the word!
•International Cultural/Social Service Opportunities - ACE is working to organize some thrilling opportunities for international travel. Spearheaded by Sandra Grymes, the plan is to develop ACE courses that will prepare participants for international work/study/social service projects. First on the agenda is Latin America. We are considering projects in Nicaragua (education/health care), Peru (education), Venezuela (fisheries/culture), Guatemala (health care), Brazil (education), Cuba (cultural), and El Salvador (education/culture). Shari Geistfeld, a PhD in Brazilian studies, is onboard to provide a 3 credit-course in Brazilian History. Related offerings for all the trips will include orientation courses in language, culture, and etiquette. The trip will be open to people interested in doing social service exchange-of-information projects. Let us know your interests, get involved, make it happen!
