Do you find emerging technologies fascinating and wish you could program? In this class, you will learn to write code that will help you create interactive and programmed systems. Systems we will work with will tend to be Open Source, and will use free software whenever possible. Software and hardware we may use includes: Arduino microcontrollers, Makey Makey, Processing, OpenSCAD, and TextWrangler. As you learn to program, we will incorporate physical components, such as switches, LEDs, motors, pressure sensors, and more. Guidance will be provided on potential purchases you may make to continue your explorations with making outside of class.
This course introduces the features of modern Macintosh computers and the most up-to-date software. The class will learn to use the Mac operating systems 10.8 or Mavericks and the iLife applications that come with new Macs: iPhoto, iTunes, Safari, and others. Also learn how to use iCloud to get all your other Apple products (iPad, iPhone ) to communicate. This course offers time each session for individual student's specific problems and questions, especially if you bring your computer to class. This is a hands-on course. iPad Basics with Apple Connections A fun and informative class that will teach beginners how to use the iOS7 iPad. Topics covered include: connecting to the internet, installing apps, playing music, taking pictures, email, printing and synchronization.
Materials: Students must provide their own iPad. NB The course content is based on the current iPad operating system version iOS7.
Excel for Beginners
This hands-on course gives you a solid understanding of Excel. Learn to navigate through a workbook, enter data, create basic formulas, explore formatting and understand printing functionality. Upon completion of the course you will be able to create and manipulate lists and budgets.
Have you ever wanted to make something with computer controlled tools? In this course we will explore some of the many free design software programs that help you to create original files that can be manufactured with machine tools, and by using web-based manufacturing services. Emphasis will be on free software packages, and tools that we have in the classroom, including: 3D printer, vinyl cutter, and the Egg-Bot, which can draw on spheres and eggs, and more. Other manufacturing options include websites that you can submit your file, pay a fee, and have your original design delivered through the mail. Beyond class, you should be able to find resources to continue to develop your design ideas.
The course is designed to assist person’s desire to pursue a prior or present interest to develop a skill in a manner which optimizes their chances for public success or personal gratification. It will help participants to self-explore their potential for any of the above. It will assist participants to research, carry out and evaluate their choice.
