ADULT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD: 2009-2010 [ACE MV]

INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER SERVICE WORK PROJECT: NICARAGUA

Participate with ACE in a learning adventure abroad. Learn about issues of rural education in Nicaragua and help a community at the same time. Several Vineyarders are engaged in humanitarian efforts in other countries. This is an opportunity to learn about community development at a grass roots level and linking communities locally and globally.

There are two available ACE winter courses that will prepare the participant to take full advantage of this unique travel opportunity.* Participants will also commit to an Orientation session to focus on the specific details and social etiquette of the trip.

The courses* are designed for preparation on three different aspects of the trip: History and Culture of Nicaragua and the region, language, teacher training to feel comfortable in the volunteer work we will be doing. These courses are offered at a 20% discount for ACE travelers.

The Orientation session will be part of the travel packet, and transportation and housing will be arranged. Language skills are not required although desirable.

PARTNER

Muriel Laverty is the Vineyarder with whom we will partner in Nicaragua. She has been doing humanitarian work there for several years. She is working with us on developing a program in her community (teaching English to elementary school children).

WHERE

We will be in Masaya, the artisan center of Nicaragua where there are many activities. Masaya is close to Granada and forty-five minutes by good road from the airport in the Capitol, Managua.  Our group will work with students in an elementary school in Pacaya.

WHEN

The trip is scheduled for winter break February 19th to 29th 2010. The duration will be nine days with the option to extend an extra week until March 7th.. Housing will be in a local hotel. Accommodations will be comfortable, but not luxurious. Dates and travel costs will be announced once we have an exact count of how many people will participate. Every attempt will be made to make this an affordable experience.

We estimate the cost will be approx $1600 includes airfare, lodging and transportation.

WHO

Adults who want to combine a learning adventure with a vacation are encouraged to apply for this program. Adults should be flexible travelers and interested in working with children. Participants acknowledge that they travel and participate at their own risk.

ENROLL

Applications are open to all. Travelers should be in good health, and must have an updated passport. Limited to 12 people.

Register for this class by sending in the application via e-mail to Sandra Grymes, trip coordinator: lynn@acemv.org. For more information, leave a voice mail message at: 508-693-1033, extension 240.
