Accounting & Bookkeeping Basics
This basic course is a prerequisite for our March class, Intro to Finance.

This class is for:
• Small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to better understand and take control of their businesses’ finances
• Anyone interested in starting a career as a professional bookkeeper
This is a basic introduction to accounting and bookkeeping principles for small business owners and people interested in entering the bookkeeping profession.
As a group, the class will create a sample business, and students will apply the methods they learn along the way*. The instructor will explain, in plain English, the terminology, methods and function of clean and accurate bookkeeping, illustrating on the classroom whiteboard and distributing hand-outs.
By the end of the class, students will have a working knowledge of these fundamentals:
- Chart of Accounts
- Double Entry Accounting
- Profit & Loss
- Balance Sheet
In addition, students who finish this class will be comfortable moving forward with our (more advanced) Intro to Finance class, and with Quickbooks.
*No computers will be needed in this class. All exercises will be hand written.

About the instructor
Gail Moffitt has been a professional bookkeeper since 2005. Originally from Levittown, Pennsylvania, she moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1987 and for several years, worked in product development and purchasing for Black Dog.
