Get ready for The Derby with the legendary Janet Messineo! Receive expert instruction from Janet, who has 40 years of experience fishing the shores of the Island. You don’t need a boat to catch fish. You can enjoy a sunrise or sunset and a walk on a beach, put food on the table or catch and release.

Learn to: 1) Tie a Knot; 2) Read a tide chart; 3) Understand the importance of wind direction; 4) How to choose the right lure for each species; 5) How to cast and retrieve; 6) Basic rod and reel care. Janet supplies all the gear and recommends what you need to get started on your own. All materials included. Space is limited.

Exploring Island History with Tom Dresser (Includes Walking Tour Field Trip & Guest Speaker)

Lecturer: Thomas Dresser

Take a closer look at our Island’s history with Island author and historian Tom Dresser. This experiential, 4-week course includes three in-class experiences and one field trip, which includes a walking tour of Oak Bluffs, plus an optional site-visit to a key World War II vantage point! In addition, Tom has also invited a guest lecturer to teach part of one class. Students will learn about our Island’s geological formation and the Native American heritage that survives today. Tom will introduce the role the Vineyard played in the American Revolution, the Civil War and World War I.  Students will also trace the demise of whaling and rise of tourism in the early 20th century, and (hopefully) grasp the current status of the Vineyard today.

Take a closer look at our Island’s Geology with Principal Earth Scientist Doug Cooper. You will explore the different phenomena and long-term evolution of Martha’s Vineyard’s atmosphere, surface, and life through a two-hour class your first day and a morning field trip the next day. Students will examine areas on the Island like Katama Plains, the North Shore, Lucy Vincent Beach, and the Clay Cliffs. Space is very limited, so please register early to reserve your spot.

Creative Non-fiction

Instructor: CK Wolfson, Published Author & Reporter

Whatever has affected, enlightened, or inspired you can become topics for wonderful writing. This workshop shows how, using your own perspective, you can turn ordinary subjects such as parenting, traveling, or observations from your daily routine into compelling and effecting prose. Make your readers feel as if they are there, sharing the experiences, and witnessing your observations. Learn basic techniques, composition and editing skills. Practice when and how to use analogies and metaphors as descriptive devices. The sessions include brief in-class writing exercises, open critiques, short assignments, and discussions about what makes some of the best examples of non-fiction writing so effective. When time permits, participants are invited to read excerpts from their works in progress and get feedback.

Photography Fundamentals

Instructor: Maria Thibodeau

This class is an introduction to the basics of photography. The course will cover everything that the beginning photographer needs to take control of their camera and move beyond the “auto” settings — including exposure, light, composition, and post-processing. It is recommended that students have a DSLR camera with manual controls in order to take full advantage of the class material. Maria Thibodeau is a professional photographer who lives year-round on Martha’s Vineyard and works in a variety of photography contexts, including journalism, event photography, family photography, and studio photography. She regularly photographs a range of community events and portraits of local and not-so-local people for the Vineyard Gazette. Le Compagnon means “with bread.” This fun, interactive class will teach you methods and techniques to produce excellent yeasted breads like popovers, croissants, and baguettes that will impress your family and friends. Do you have a children’s book in you waiting to be written? Take this three-night intensive course with children’s book author Kate Feiffer to learn the fundamentals of writing for children and getting published. Should you find you own illustrator? How long should your book be? What about self-publishing? This class will include writing exercises. About the instructor: Kate Feiffer is an award-winning author of 11 children’s books, which includes the picture books Double Pink, Henry the Dog with No Tail, and  My Mom is Trying to Ruin My Life, and the middle-grade novels The Problem with The Puddles,  and Signed by Zelda.
