 Photography Fundamentals

This class is an introduction to the basics of photography. The course will cover everything that the beginning photographer needs to take control of their camera and move beyond the “auto” settings — including exposure, light, composition, and post-processing. It is recommended that students have a DSLR camera with manual controls in order to take full advantage of the class material.

Uncover the secrets of the Island’s formation from the last ice age to present day by exploring geologically important sites including the clay cliffs of Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark.

Exploring Island History  

Lecturer: Thomas Dresser

The story of the Vineyard forms a unique block in the American quilt. Delve into island history from its geological formation through the Native American heritage that survives today. Learn of the role the Vineyard played in the American Revolution, abolitionism and the Civil War. Trace the demise of whaling and rise of tourism in the early 20th century and understand how the Vineyard participated in World War II. Finally, grasp the current status of the Vineyard today.

Woodworking for Beginners

This class will make you friends with all the hand tools in the shop – the bandsaw, table saw, joiner, cordless drills and fasteners. This project based class will focus also on working with pneumatic tools, compressors, as well as sanding and the finishing process. All skill levels are welcome!

Initial licensure For Teachers (Class Measures)

Instructor: Peg Regan, Performance Review Program Initial Licensure (PRPIL) Consultant

Attain your initial licensure through the Class Measures approach with a consultant
from the Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education and an island mentor through a portfolio- based practicum here in your own classroom. You must be hired by the MV Public Schools as a teacher of record in your subject to qualify. Licensure is valid for 5 years and renewable for another 5 years. Observations in classroom, consultation by appointment.

Adult Basic Education and HiSET Exam Prep

Get yourself on a track toward a career and more fulfilling employment. This program prepares adults to make a successful transition from postsecondary programs and begin careers in high-demand fields. Prepare yourself for taking the HiSET Examination and/or develop the communication skills to advance toward a career. Diagnostic testing for each student to measure proficiency in five subject areas: reading, writing, math, science, and history. “Flipped classroom” design and rolling admissions individualizes your learning experience through computer-based tutoring. Free mentorships available. Scholarships available. This class is made available by a generous grant from The Vineyard Golf Club Foundation.
