Intro to Business: Strategy, Implementation & Execution

Instructors: Norman Werthwein, CPA; SCORE* Speakers

What are your business goals? In this course, you will be introduced to business terminology, learn how to write a business plan, present your ideas, and build an internal and external team. In addition, you will learn the steps in organizing a business, the legal structure of a business, and what licensing and permits you will need.

About the instructors: This course is being taught by members of S.C.O.R.E. [Service Corps of Retired Executives] and overseen by Norm Werthein. Norm was the Chief Financial Officer [CFO] for Tiffany & CO., Chief Accounting Officer for Avon Products, Inc., and CFO for other privately held and public companies. He is Treasurer for ACE MV and serves on the Boards of both local and national nonprofits. He served two years in the U.S. Army and began his career with a public accounting firm. Norm is a CPA and holds a B.A. in Accounting from Franklin & Marshall College.

Improv for Success in Business & Life
A 2-Day Workshop

Instructor: Heidi Drew, MA

Did you know that corporations and business schools use acting improvisation workshops like this one to teach valuable professional skills like creativity, flexibility, teamwork and leadership?

Improvisational acting is an effective tool to hone your listening, communication and cooperative skills in a relaxed and fun setting. Get out of your comfort zone and discover how improv can help you in your career — and in life!

You do NOT have to be:

All you have to be able to do is:
• listen • let go of perfectionism • have fun

Heidi Drew leads improvisation classes and workshops in New Zealand, Santa Cruz, California and now, here on Martha’s Vineyard. She has a Masters Degree in Art Education and taught visual arts for many years while dabbling in theater.

Principles of Management

Instructor: Aline Wolff, PhD

Whether you are the owner of a small, local business or work for a large national organization, you should know the basic principles of management that this class introduces. In this class, you’ll learn about managing both up and down to become successful in any type of business. You’ll be introduced to effective business communication in writing and speaking. Most important, you will leave the class with guidelines about how to manage your business life more effectively: your team, your investors, your customers and your vendors.

About the instructor: Prof. Wolff focuses both on the academic and the practical side of management, and has coached numerous start-ups and entrepreneurs. She taught for more than 20 years at the NYU Stern School of Business, and has worked and consulted for organizations as varied as Goldman Sachs, IBM and Training/Vision Inc (Singapore).

Design Thinking For Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs

Instructor: Aline Wolff, PhD

In this class, you’ll learn the basic principles of Design Thinking for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and practice applying those principles to real businesses – including your own current or future business.  Using design thinking will help you understand how empathy for customers is at the core of the design thinking process. You’ll also learn how to generate and test new business ideas and build on them systematically. In a business world where change is sometimes the only constant, learning how to develop new ideas is a pathway to success.

Introduction to Sketchup: 3D Modeling for Architects, Landscapers, & Interior Designers

Instructor: Elsbeth Todd, M.Ed.

SketchUp is a professional software program used to visualize design concepts in 3D and is utilized in design professions for a variety of purposes. SketchUp software allows you to build your design concepts digitally to scale and then manipulate them for use in a variety of ways; presentations, technical drawings, video fly-throughs and 3D printing. Learning the basic skills will give the student a solid foundation on which to build or take their ideas to the next level in realistic scale. Learn the basics of SketchUp and bring your design ideas!

TECHNICAL LEVEL: Ideally, students should be comfortable working with a Mac, but as long as you are comfortable with a PC, you should be fine. The application is the same in both PC and Mac.

Note: To gain the most from this course, students are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions.

Introduction to Quickbooks (SOLD OUT)

Instructor: Linda Habekost, Accounts Manager, Beetlebung Tree Care

This hands-on, entry-level course uses a sample company file created by Intuit. Students will learn tangible skills: (1) Basic Accounting Terminology and Principles, (2) setting up Vendor and Customer accounts, (3) creating Invoices and receiving Payments, (4) entering and paying Vendor invoices, (5) managing Bank and Credit Card accounts, including reconciliations, (6) entering Employees, tracking Employee time and processing Payroll.  Upon completion students will have a basic understanding of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll and Banking and how these function in QuickBooks. 

TECHNICAL LEVEL: This class uses the PC version of Quickbooks. Students who take this course should be very comfortable working with a PC.

Note: Students will be assigned a PC the first day of class and are asked not to bring personal or work computers to class. To gain the most from this course, students are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions. 

About the instructor: Linda Habekost is an experienced bookkeeper and has worked for private, municipal, and non-profit organizations for more than 20 years. Her areas of expertise include payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. She has also mentored numerous individuals seeking assistance in QuickBooks and in general bookkeeping practices.

Diagnosing & Maintaining Your PC: A 2-Day Workshop

Instructor: Erika Berg, Computer Specialist

Make computer maintenance part of our routine! You will learn preventative maintenance, which can save you a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting and help prevent serious computer problems from occurring. This two-day workshop introduces you to the tools you’ll need to maintain and protect your PC, including:

(1) Disk Defragmenting; (2) Browser Cleanup and Internet Speed; (3) Firewall Management; (4) Virus and Spyware Scams; (5) Anti-virus and Malware Downloads; and (6) How to Back Up Your Data.
