This series is made up of 3 online courses. Feel free to enroll in one, two, or all three for a complete immersion course that will prepare you to share your talents with the world.


COURSE A

Ted Talk Talks: On Writing

Length: 2 weeks, 2 hours per week

Join ACE MV Executive Director Holly Bellebuono for four TED talks and lively discussions. Carefully selected for their emphasis on creativity and inspiration for writers, these lectures are provocative, timely, and certain to stir discussion and ideas. One lecture per week with discussion afterwards; this online series is free with a suggested donation of $15.

About the facilitator

Award-winning author Holly Bellebuono has published 7 books, five of which were accepted by her New York literary agent and then contracted with major publishers for publication since 2012. One has been reprinted in a second edition and one has been published in a second language. Holly lectures internationally as a medical herbalist and teaches entrepreneurship and goal-setting. She is Executive Director of the educational nonprofit ACE MV.

COURSE B

Fiction Writing Techniques

Instructor: Maia Raber

Thursdays, July 2 – 23, 10am-11am – ONLINE via Zoom

Length: 4 weeks, 1 hour per week

This class focuses on the building blocks of writing fiction: establishing plot, point of view, character, and setting. With a combination of direct teaching (including excerpts from published fiction), in-class prompts and at-home writing, and classwide or group workshopping, the course welcomes writers of all levels. By the end of the four weeks, students will have one complete short story or a few story openings to develop in the future. 

WEEK 1: Generating plot with characters’ desires and the dramatic question
WEEK 2: Narrative voice and perspective: the possibilities of first, second, and third person 
WEEK 3: Showing character through meaningful dialogue and gesture
WEEK 4: Using setting to enhance tension; balancing fictional elements for textured stories

About the instructor

Maia Raber lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has taught high school English for the past eight years, the past six of which have been at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School. At Concord-Carlisle, she has taught Creative Writing as a senior elective every spring. She has also taken a variety of writing classes — most recently through the Harvard Teachers as Scholars program — and enjoys writing fiction and personal essays. She holds a BA in English Literature from Kenyon College and an MAT in English from Boston College.


COURSE C

How To Write A Book Proposal

Wednesdays, July 29 – August 19, 9am-10am
– ONLINE via Zoom

Instructor: Holly Bellebuono

Length: 4 weeks, 1 hour per week

If you have an idea for a book that you wish to market to a publisher–whether fiction or nonfiction–you’ll need a proposal. This 4-part course covers the basics of the most important elements of a successful book proposal, guiding you through thinking about essential details to craft a marketable, full-concept project. Students should have a manuscript already started or near-complete.
