From Ancient Greece to (Ancient) Martha’s Vineyard: On the Nature of Sacred Sites

Lecturer: Jon Scott

This talk, illustrated with slides, will document a kind of pilgrimage my wife and I have taken over the years to find the sacred character of sites in ancient Greece, megalithic Britain, “Celtic” Vermont, and the solar sites of Martha’s Vineyard.  There is much we do not know, or cannot be certain of, but my hope is that this presentation may lead us to see our own Island and its “forgotten” past in a new light.

Writing Island Histories

Enjoy an overview of the history of Martha’s Vineyard, from its ancient geological formation through the Native American heritage that survives today, to the settlement by white men in the 17th century. The story of the Vineyard today can be traced from the activities of our forebears. Touching on economic strategies, historical anomalies and social customs, the story of the Vineyard forms a unique block in the American quilt.

I supply all the gear and recommend what you need to get started on your own. All materials included. Class limited to 4 students.
