The Business of Farming

It’s a FREE 2 Day workshop just for farmers (of all kinds – we just thought the sheep was cute).

Thursdays, March 26 and April 2, 1-5pm
Location: MV Agricultural Society Hall
Cost: FREE for FARMERS (pre-registration required)

This class will meet two weeks in a row. In the first session, we will discuss tools for looking back at the past growing seasons and evaluate how things went. Specific topics will include:

  • Record keeping including bookkeeping systems and an overview of QuickBooks
  • Reading financial statements to better understand profitability and cash flow
  • Channel analysis – how to evaluate the profitability of different crops and/or sales channels.

The second session will provide ways to assess opportunities for future growth or changes in operations.  Topics will include:

  • Cash Flow Budgeting (we will also address some of the questions/concerns about the seasonal economy)
  • Enterprise Analysis  – how to evaluate new opportunities
  • Preparing for financing

There will be plenty of time for Q&A, so bring your numbers and your questions.

Julia Shanks – author of “The Farmer’s Office: Tools, Tips and Templates to Successfully Manage a Growing Farm Business” – works with food and agricultural entrepreneurs to help them achieve and maintain financial sustainability.
